Marshals – Mags & Ron Symonds

By Dick & Margaret Emms

The BarbecueThursday was fine and bright as people arrived for the rally joining those of us who had come earlier in the week to take advantage of the special rate negotiated with the owners by Mags & Ron.  They found widely spaced pitches mostly very flat and each with its own water point allowing super pitch facilities to be used. Unfortunately Alan, Avis and Iris Fieldhouse were unable to come because Alan was poorly, we wish him all the best.  Showers in the evening meant the Wendy House came into its own for the welcome coffee where we all met up and were introduced to the new ralliers Adrian & Corinthe Newman and Martin & Mair Jones.  Conversation flowed freely and it certainly gave us the chance to catch up on all the news and gossip that we had missed having spent so much time over the last 2 years in France.

Friday was again fine and sunny with people disappearing to see the sights around.  The evening was still fine so the barbecue was held with everybody sitting out in the sun for the meal.  The smells surrounding the site were delicious and the men did a superb job of cooking with no evidence of black on any of the food in spite of the fact that we were all fortified with our own personal tipple.  People moved into the Wendy House as it got cooler where Mags treated us all to coffee. A great end to a very enjoyable day.

The BarbecueSaturday was fine until the evening when we had showers but that didn’t matter as we went out to a local pub for an excellent carvery (booked by Colin and Ann Hewitt) with portions of meat so large that I know several dogs benefited from the excess when we got back to the site.  Thinking about dogs, there was a very good dog walk round the fishing lake at the far end of the site.

Sunday was Flag which was held in Mags’s & Ron’s awning as the Wendy house had been taken down to ensure it stayed dry.  The competition was won by Alan & Jean Holdcroft after names had been drawn out of a hat to separate the 4 couples who had each got the same number correct.  It was quite a stiff quiz which required a lot of thought and head scratching, something most of us gave up several years ago.

Monday unfortunately we had to go home as we had discovered a water leak coming from behind the shower and had booked it in for repair on the Tuesday before we go to France.  For those remaining Colin & Ann had arranged for us to go to visit the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight only a few miles from the site. (This also involved a lunch at the beautiful Petwood Hotel in Woodhall Spa a few miles further on. While en-route in a convey of cars our new ralliers Martin and Mair lost their way. We were all worried about them, but after we had placed our orders for lunch they suddenly arrived and were greeted with a big cheer. We were so pleased they found us, and a really good lunch was enjoyed by all. – Mags)

Our thanks go to Mags & Ron for a very enjoyable rally and for organising respectable weather during what has been a fairly dreadful summer. Note. Our caravan has been fixed and it turned out to be an internal leak from the shower tap itself so no blame can be attached to Standish during the manufacture.
